Get Unplugged: Disconnect from Technology with a Virtual Fast

We’ve all been there: staring into a screen on Facebook or Instagram, thoughtlessly scrolling through photos, videos, and our friends’ political opinions, and suddenly 45 minutes have passed by. Unless you live under a rock or in an off-the-grid location (which you probably don’t, since you’re reading this article), you are no doubt immersed in the great void that is modern technology.

We truly live in an amazing time. Modern technology and the information age has forever changed the way we operate in this world; we move faster, communicate faster, and eat faster. Almost every aspect of the way we exist as a civilization has been affected by technology, from dating apps to growing food indoors with grow lights.

As innovative and convenient as modern technology is (really, where would we be without GPS?), constant use of technology, especially screens, overstimulates the senses, which can be overwhelming and ultimately unhealthy for the mind and body. Too much screen time can have physical, mental, and emotional side effects, such as eye strain and hearing impairment, insomnia due to melatonin disruption, weight gain from a sedentary lifestyle, and anxiety. What’s more, spending too much time in front of screens can disconnect us from our relationships and the natural world.

Technology presents a blessing and a curse in the form of constant connection. While we have the ability to contact people on the other side of the world at any time of day through the internet and mobile devices, constant technological connection also allows people to work nonstop by being always available through email and telephone. This has led to a major imbalance between peoples’ work and personal lives.

One of the best ways to find a balance with technology use is by implementing regular technology fasts. Technology fasts are essential for giving our minds and bodies a break by disconnecting from the world of media and turning inward. Constant technology use can disconnect us from our inner world by fixing our attention on outside stimuli. Taking a technology fast allows for slowing down to the pace of nature and experiencing stillness. Because ultimately, true satisfaction comes from a connection to our Self, which can only be found within.

Interested in taking a break from technology but not sure how to use your time? Technology fasts can be an excellent way to reconnect to your passions and are a great way to engage in new or old hobbies. Use your screen-free time to enjoy some of the following activities:

  • Reading
  • Hiking (or going for a walk near your home)
  • Exercising
  • Meditating
  • Playing board games
  • Making art
  • Playing an instrument
  • Cooking
  • Re-organizing your home

Technology fasts can be done for as little or as long as desired. Taking a day off from screens can often be done more easily on the weekend, especially Sunday. One full day sound too intimidating? Start for just an hour per day, preferably before bed, and gradually build your way up to more intentional time away from screens.

Remember, technology fasting is not meant to be a punishment! Rather, it’s a way to find balance in life and reconnect with the present moment.

Happy fasting!
